Mr. Richard Franklin Gainer was born in Morgantown, West Virginia on January 18, 1929. His parents were in agriculturally related pursuits and small farmers and moved to Harrisonburg, Virginia in January 1943.
He graduated from high school in 1948 and was converted to Christ by the Holy Spirit in 1948 and married in 1949 to Lois Armentrout. They have three girls, two of which are twins, twelve grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
His college education began at Bob Jones University in 1959 where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Religion in 1964. He pastored an independent church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina until 1965 and also worked as a social worker. He returned to Bob Jones University to pursue a Master of Arts degree in Bible in 1965 which was completed in 1967. He received the Bakerís Book House Award for the most outstanding Masterís student. While pursuing his Masterís degree he taught two classes of first year Greek, five days per week. Upon completion of the Masterís degree he became a full-time faculty member of Bob Jones University and taught Old Testament Survey, Pauline Epistles, second year Greek, first year Hebrew and also served as interim pastor of a Presbyterian church for a brief period and preached in other churches on an irregular basis.
In 1970, he left Bob Jones University to attend Covenant Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri for a short time, but was forced to return to work in Greensboro, North Carolina. He taught in various church schools different classes over the next twenty years. In 1990, he retired to North Fort Myers, Florida, where he ministered in a retirement village for eight years. He returns annually to preach here when he returns to the area for visits. Simultaneous to this ministry, he also served ten years as a ruling/teaching elder at a United Reformed Church in Cape Coral. He later moved to Greenville, South Carolina to be closer to family and lives on the Bob Jones University campus for retired faculty. He preaches each Lord's Day at the United Veterans Association. He is a member of a Presbyterian Church in America. He spends much of his time interacting with his Greek students primarily at RITS. He is also assisting RITS to develop a Bible College curriculum.
